HVAC Integration

Cleori enables heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to participate in the Estonian mFRR (manual Frequency Restoration Reserve) market operated by Elering. Our platform provides seamless integration for commercial and industrial HVAC systems, unlocking new revenue streams through grid flexibility services.

Why HVAC Flexibility?

HVAC systems are ideal for flexibility markets due to their:

  • Down-regulation capability - Reduce power consumption during peak demand
  • Thermal inertia - Building mass provides buffer for short reductions
  • Large power footprint - Significant impact from modest adjustments
  • Predictable patterns - Well-understood operational profiles

Integration Requirements

Minimum Specifications

  • Capacity: 10 kW minimum power draw
  • Control: BMS or API integration
  • Response: < 15 minutes activation
  • Granularity: 10% power steps
  • Communication: Real-time capable

Supported Technologies

  • Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems
  • Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF)
  • Chiller plants with BMS
  • Rooftop units with controls
  • All major BMS platforms

Telemetry Requirements

Important: Telemetry must be sent at least every 10 seconds to meet Estonian mFRR market requirements.

ParameterFieldUnitDescriptionRequired
TimetimeRFC 3339Timestamp of measurement
PowerpowerkWCurrent power consumption

Flexible Submission: Telemetry values can be sent all together in a single request or individually as they become available. The API accepts partial updates - you only need to include the time field and at least one measurement value.

Integration via Cleori API

Currently, integration is supported exclusively through the Cleori API. Partners must implement the required endpoints for telemetry submission and activation reception.

Sending Telemetry

Receiving and Confirming Activations

Time-Critical: Activation signals must be acknowledged promptly to maintain grid stability during peak demand events.

Polling Requirement: Activations must be checked at least once per minute to ensure timely response to grid requirements.

Down-Regulation Implementation

How it works: When the grid needs demand reduction, Cleori sends down-regulation signals to your HVAC system. You temporarily reduce power consumption through setpoint adjustments or equipment cycling and get compensated for the flexibility service in the mFRR market.

Getting Started

  1. Step 1: System Assessment
Verify BMS integration capability and control granularity
  2. Step 2: API Integration
Implement telemetry submission and activation polling
  3. Step 3: Testing
Test load reduction with simulated activations
  4. Step 4: Market Validation
Validate compliance with Estonian mFRR requirements
  5. Step 5: Revenue Generation
Start earning from demand flexibility services
